Rowing

The final weekend of the South African schools rowing season arrived. The South African Schools’ Rowing Championships regatta was held from 3 to 5 March. At Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria, the St Mary’s rowers reached the pinnacle of their success. All age groups competed in heats, trying to qualify for the A finals.

The St Mary’s girls row as a team and although the girls wanted to win their races, the most important aspect of the weekend was getting as many points as possible in order to win the overall trophy. The girls performed superbly in both categories, winning many races and having many B boats racing in A finals. The U14 and Open girls showed their strength in both, taking the first four places in single sculls.

St Mary’s won many medals, however, it is in team spirit where our colour shone the brightest. All the girls were always cheering, supporting and helping one another on and off the water. Juniors, seniors and coaches all worked together to ensure a smooth weekend.

The Senior Opens rowing their last chill races could not have performed without the support and care from the club. The club could not have performed without the love and support from parents, friends and coaches. This weekend, although slightly wet, will surely sit in our girls’ hearts for a long time to come.
