Giving

Why give?

“There is no development tool more effective than the education of girls” – Kofi Annan, secretary-general of the United Nations, 1997-2006

During St Mary’s School’s history, spanning more than a century, many generous donors who have contributed to the wellbeing of the school by supporting various fundraising initiatives for facilities, and for teachers and pupils. It is thanks to these donors that St Mary’s remains a leader and a beacon in girls’ education. St Mary’s continues to appeal to the generosity of those who support the school in its endeavours to remain a top-class educator of girls.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela

Tax-efficient giving

In terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act, donations to approved public benefit organisations in South Africa are, subject to certain limits, tax-deductible by the donor where the donor is a South African income tax resident. Donors may claim up to 10% of their taxable income.

The St Mary’s School Waverley Foundation (St Mary’s Foundation) has been approved by SARS as a public benefit organisation and also for the purposes of Section 18A. Your donation to the St Mary’s Foundation will, therefore, in addition to being an investment in the future of young women in South Africa, provide tax relief to you, the donor.

Leave a legacy

Currently, estate duty is levied at a rate of 20% on assets exceeding R3.5-million in the estate at the time of the donor’s death. One way to avoid paying estate duty is by leaving a legacy to an institution such as St Mary’s School. Charitable legacies of this nature are deducted from the value of the estate before duty is calculated.

It is best to consult with your attorney for advice if you plan to make a charitable gift to St Mary’s in terms of a will.

Should you have any queries or wish to discuss leaving a legacy further, email Gillian O’Shaughnessy, Foundation manager at St Mary’s School, at gillian.oshaughnessy@stmary.co.za to make an appointment.

Ways to give a gift

There are two ways you can give to the For Girls campaign:

You can leave it up to us

The St Mary’s Foundation has a sound Board comprising highly skilled individuals who are committed to St Mary’s, and the school itself has a strong management team and leader in the headmistress, Deanne King. Donors are encouraged to demonstrate their trust in the school by allowing the Board to allocate funds according to the most pressing needs or accumulate funds to secure growth for the future, through making an unspecified gift.

You can choose a programme

Should you feel that you would like to make a specific contribution, you may specify that you would like your gift allocated to one of the following programmes:

  • The St Mary’s Foundation Bursary Fund – supporting girls in need
  • Ikusasa Lethu – working for the good of our communities
  • The Endowment Fund – ensuring education for girls for generations to come
  • The St Mary’s Old Girls’ Teaching Bursary – train a teacher
  • The St Mary’s Scholarship Fund – rewarding exceptional girls
  • The St Mary’s Old Girls’ Scholarship – rewarding girls embodying the ethos and spirit of St Mary’s
